[TenTec] Problems with latest firmware download

J, Gud thinking thru the problem.
I had already placed the file in a dedicated folder and tried.
I shortened the file's name to 8 characters and tried to run it.
I get the exact same error message.
Apparently this ORIONU~1.cfg file is part of the installation
process for the update software.
Normally the user doesn't even see it.
I'm going to change its name to "Harvy" since I'm the only one
who is currently seeing it ;-)
I only have this problem on my ham computer (W98 SR2 + all
updates).
On my business computer (Windows 2000) the program extracts,
installs, and I can start the installation.
However I get an error message "can't communicate with the
radio".
I'm away all day today. Tonight I'll measure the two cables I
tried. Maybe they're both null modem cables. I haven't used
anything on Serial for at least 5 years and can't remember what
the cables were.
Thanks for the help.
Rick

rick,
something that i have run across w/different software is that
some companies
still create their software w/the old DOS 8.3 nomenclature.
meaning that
when you download a file, if you run into problems w/the install,
one of the
things to try is to move it into a directory/folder that contains
folder
names having 8 or less characters per name. altho this
throw-back to the
old DOS days is getting very rare, i still come across it at
times.
as you can see from your message above, windoze has shortened
your folder &
filename down to the 8 char. limit by supplying the "~" as the
7th char and
adding a number as the eighth. even tho' windoze does this, some
programs
still refuse to acknowledge this.
so, try creating a folder w/something like C:\firmware and place
your
download in that folder. then, change TT's filename name to that
of 8 char.
or less. make sure that windoze recognizes that it is a program
file so
that it'll run when doing an install (usually when it ends in a
".exe" which
equals the ".3" of the 8.3 convention i mentioned above). not
sure how
winXP does installs since i no longer use micro$haft's products
beyond
win98, so XP's install procedure may be different (referring to
your ".cfg"
file above). but it's safe to say that your folders/filenames
should all be
8 chars. or less.
HTH,
j
