[TenTec] Why is the Jupiter better?

The IC-746 PRO does not allow for installation of any extra filters. It's
last IF stage is DSP just like the Jupiter although I suspect it has a more
modern processor. In fact, it's processor is newer than the IC-756PROII.
Icom has corrected the bug that caused loss of transmit power. I had one
here for a while and compared it with the PROII. There was very little or no
difference. The display in the 746 was the main difference.

Hi Bob,
I think the IC-746 PRO and Jupiter are 'in the same class'. However when you
compare prices you would also have to add at least a filter to the ICOM
price - no need to add a filter (and you really can't) in a JUPITER.
Also if I see the TT page in the US you get a Deskmicrophone for free the
next weeks if you order a JUPITER. The nonAT Jupiter is 1269,- and if you
add the tuner yourself it seems that the tuner is $ 209,- making a total of
$ 1478,- making the price gap smaller (you need an PS on the JUPITER still)
...
Depending on what you operate most the variable SSB transmit bandwidth is a
big plus on the JUPITER and so is possibility to update the JUPITER over the
internet plus fully PC-controllable e.g. with N4PY's software.
With the 30 day risk free trial you have in the US I would go for the
JUPITER for sure ...

I can get an Icom IC-746 Pro for $1300 including power supply and
microphone. It looks like it has the same features as the Jupiter plus I
get 6M and 2M. A Jupiter will cost me almost $1700 if I get the external
fan and some sort of tuner (internal or external) and power supply. The
microphone is free for awhile.
I want to support Ten-Tec as it is an American company and I grew up with
Knight-Kits and Heathkits, but is the Jupiter that superior to other rigs in
its class?

Bob
