I received the following very prompt response from Paul at
Ten-Tec ( service at tentec.com ):

Dear Bill:

Connecting pin 2 to the shell of the microphone connector will not damage
the Orion, it could increase the possibility of getting STRAY RF into the
microphone circuit of the Orion and thus cause distortion or hum. With the
Studio One ONLY (no other Ten-Tec microphone has been modified and will
still work without modification to the microphone or Orion) the cable has
been rewired. The audio shield is connected to pin 2 and this is connected
to the ground on the logic board only. The new cable has a shield that
covers all wires, this shield is connected to the body of the microphone and
to the shell of the connector on the end of the cable, the shell is
connected to chassis ground. PTT with the Studio One is from pin 3 to the
shell. PTT with all previous Ten-Tec microphones is from pin 2 to pin 3. In
some very early Orions the shell of the microphone jack was not grounded ,
IN THIS CASE ONLY the rewired Studio One would not key the Orion. If the
rewired cable for the Studio One is used on another Heil microphone it will
NOT key the Orion. Any Heil microphone that uses pins 2 and 3 for PTT will
key the Orion. I hope this clears any confusion about the Heil microphone
and the Orion. If there is STRAY RF in the shack, the microphone should be
wired with a cable that has a shield around all the wires and this shield
should be connected to the shell and PTT should be between pin 3 and the
shell.

Just for my own curiosity, I asked Paul to clarify how to tell whether
we might have an Orion whose microphone shell was not grounded. Mine
showed a short from the shell to chassis, but I wanted to know if this was
a valid test. Here's his response:

Dear Bill:

Only way to know is to measure from the shell to chassis ground with an Ohm
meter. This would not be an issue unless the Studio One was used or the
microphone was wired with PTT to shell.

Please contact me any time there is a question about any Ten-Tec product and
I will be happy to get you the proper answer
