You're right - I hear nothing between dits at ~25 WPM.  I have to slow
WAY down before I can hear bleeps in between the dits.  I can hear
between word breaks tho - and this is why I barely noticed it working the
contest this evening.  I could still hear the other guy between words. 
Still, not quite the same.  So, Steve, you're sending your Orion back? 
These guys are pretty good with the firmware - you might want to
reconsider.
