Hope this gives an idea.

When I first set up my orion, I found the display to change on me during 
operation

Traced it down to the power supply delivering low voltage.

anything below 12.7 volts will cause the display to change.

On transmit it would drop to 12.6,

The rig still operates, just the contrast changes.

Adjusted my supply voltage up and all was fine.

Try measureing the power supply voltage over time,  check the connector to 
the rig and power supply,  etc.. etc..
