Steve .. TT only has rights to the code that they wrote. If a piece is 
indeed reverse engineered, and it has been done before, the person doing the 
disassembly would have no obligation to TT. A very talented gentleman 
(WB8BFS Jack Giehl) did exactly what you are suggesting to the Kenwood 
TS-940 and marketed updated EPROMS with all kinds of neat new features for a 
long time.
