[TenTec] Why N1MM does not support the Tentec file interface

This question has come up several times.
As I understand it, the file interface only supports the following
interface.
· LINE 1 = Main VFO Frequency in Mhz, with a single decimal point.
· LINE 2 = Main VFO Mode, in standard character form (AM, FM, USB, LSB, CW).
· LINE 3 = Opposite VFO Frequency in Mhz, as above, if in SPLIT operation.
· LINE 4 = Opposite VFO Mode, as above, if in SPLIT operation.
N1MM Logger supports custom filter setting, rit tuning & clearing, ptt, and
dual
receive in addition to the above. For the Orion, it also handle dvk
functions via the aux input. These are handled in a fashion appropriate
to contesting, as it is a contest logging program.
To add a file-based interface would involve a lot of testing, as it is so
dissimilar to
what is already supported. To spend that much time to support something that
cripples
much of the functionality does not seem worth it. Further, I am not sure why
someone
would want to fiddle with two programs while trying to contest.
I am an Orion owner. If there is some Orion function that you feel is useful
in contesting, please let me know.

I have used a Timewave 599zx to improve the Orion's
shape factor in narrow bandwidths, and have found it
effective. Since it works on the margins and is not a
major source of selectivity I have not found any
problems with the AGC action. I also like the way the
Timewave filter shapes SSB audio on the Orion.
With respect to N1MM's software I like it, but I wish
it would support the ten tec file interface so I could
use N4PY's software in conjunction with the N1MM
software.
I found Bob's narative of his experience with Orion's
receiver in the SO2R environment enlightening.
