From Ship Radio officers in the days when they were used on the Great
Lakes freighters and passenger ships. Teen years up until WW2.

Seems to be associated with a long dash used on various letters/numbers,
such as: 8 = dah dah daaaah di dit. C = daaah di dah dit. Q = dah daaaah
di dah. And many others.

It may have some practical value in copying thru noise/QRN

Don't know why it was named "Lake Erie." Erie is one of the roughest lakes
when it comes to storms, if that has anything to do with it.
