New Rig Suggestion

>>>>>>I don't know if the numbers would work out, but wouldn't it be
fantastic if
a new ham could get on the air with a new basic rig and antenna for under
$500?<<<<<<<

On the air with a new rig for under $500?

Option #1: **********************************
Tech class:
   TT-1220 2 meter FM transceiver kit $195.00
   TT-1222 30 watt amplifier module kit $84.00
   RatShack Cat # 64-009 Rosin Core Solder-8.0 oz. $8.39
   RatShack Cat # 64-2802 5-Piece Basic Soldering Set $7.99
MFJ-1401 2 METER VERT GROUND PLANE HRO PRICE $19.95
   Total for No-Code Tech: $315.33
PLUS, the new ham gets more experience and knowledge building their own rig
and hopefully a bunch of respect from the "Extras" for having done so.

Option #2: **********************************
Tech+, General or Extra 'Lite':
TT 1315 15m QRP CW transceiver kit $99.00
   (TT 1320, 1330, 1340 & 1380 for 20m, 30m, 40m or 80m same price)
   RatShack Cat # 64-009 Rosin Core Solder-8.0 oz. $8.39
   RatShack Cat # 64-2802 5-Piece Basic Soldering Set $7.99
   TT 3003 Acro-Bat antenna hanger $9.95
(to keep the code copyable - mine wasn't)
TT 1553 Budget Electronic Keyer $14.00
BENCHER BY-1 KEYER PADDLE BLACK BASE 170-01 HRO PRICE $99.95
   Total: $229.33
PLUS, the new ham gets more experience and knowledge building their own rig
and deserves a bunch of respect from the "Extras" for having done so.

OK, so I've missed the cost of a wad of old RG-58, a couple PL-259's, some
#12 wire and chunks of PVC for insulators but I'm really hoping there's a
ham somewhere that isn't still bemoaning the loss of 13 or 20wpm and donates
some of their junk box to build and tune the antenna. Oh, A really good
Elmer will also pony up another $39 after the new ham finishes the project
and donates the first years membership to the ARRL.
