[TenTec] Amp

Hi Jim,

I have owned a Jupiter and also an ALS 600, but not at the same time.
I used the ALS 600 with both my Omni VI and my Omni VI+.
According to Ten-Tec, they haven't changed the transmitter much in 30 years
(except for adding the keying loop - but that was long ago) so there
shouldn't be much difference.

I didn't use the keying loop. I only used the normal EXT TR single line.
For SSB you don't have to do anything. For CW I intentionally did not run
QSK because I didn't want to risk burning the relay inside the ALS 600
(which I had done many times with the previous AL80A). All I did was add a
little bit of delay to the QSK Delay so that I could hear between words, but
not between dits or letters.

I never had any problems with it and I ran lots of contests.

MORE RELATED INFO:

I wanted to get it playing QSK and bought the Ameritron QSK-5 which was
expensive. I tried all kinds of ways to interface the two (using the keying
loop) but simply never got it working satisfactorily. I finally sold the
QSK-5 and stuck to semi-QSK.

I was very happy with the ALS 600 outside of contests, but sold it due to an
annoying problem. Its Fault Monitoring was simply too fast. I found that
my wire antennas would blow in the wind during the winter contests which
causes an instantaneous surge in SWR, though only for a second. That was
enough to trip the Fault. There was no acoustical warning - just a red
light. Since my eyes were always on the computer screen or the Omni, often
I didn't see the red lamp for minutes. So I found myself running 100w
often, for unknown lengths of time. I guess I could have built my own
acoustical signal but I never did. I switched back to tubes and bought a
HF-2000 which I used for about 5 years.

I recently found a transistor amp that looked good so I have switched back
to transistors again. This time I have a Henry SS750HF. It does NOT
monitor SWR - only temperature. Therefore the brief SWR excursions do not
trigger the Fault Monitor. I ran it in CQWW CW and it performed flawlessly.
It never even got warm. My only complaint is the fan noise. I'm going to
slow them down a bit to the extent that the amp begins to get warm. Then I
think I'll have the perfect amp (for here in Germany where our power limit
is 750 watts). Its big brother, the SS1200HF is probably a better choice
for the states because it almost runs the legal limit.

The ALS 600 is a good amp and if I hadn't have been a contester I would not
have sold it. Its power was enough for my needs.

Is there anyone running the Jupiter with the Ameritron ALS 600? If so
could you tell me how you have it hooked up. Thanks for any help.
