[TenTec] ladder line

Hey guys, comparing a Gap Titan to a flat-top or a horizontal loop is
already an apples to oranges comparison.  The vertical is vertically
polarized and the two others are horizontally polarized.  

For short haul (NVIS), both horizontal antennas are going to work better
anyway.

For long haul (transatlantic) you might just find that the GAP works better.
I've never had a GAP but I can assure you that my vertical dipole with just
6m (19 ft.) per side works 10dB better than my horizontal full size dipole
up 13m (40 ft.) for transatlantic work.  Both are fed with ladderline.

When I work local German hams, the vertical is about 3 S-Units weaker.

Finally, I have built the "Cloud Burner" many times, especially for Field
Day and DX-Peditions (i.e., in Andorra in 1979) and I confirm that it's
about 10 dB better than a dipole - but I've never had the space a home to
put one up.

We also found that this Cloud Burner (horizontal loop, with 4x 20m-long
sides and fed with ladderline) was as good or better on the high bands
(10/15/20) as our 2-el. Quad which was up just 10m high.  This only applied
to stations located off the 4 corners but for work here in Europe, you can
have one corner facing stateside while the other faces Japan and the third
is long-path to VK.  The the +10 dB on the lower bands.  What a Field Day
antenna!!!

Balanced feed it a good thing.  But it isn't magic.

The 10dB between the zepp with ladder line and the Titan most likely had
almost everything to do with how poor the Titan is on 75 and almost nothing
to do with ladder line.  A GAP Challenger also covers 75 -- meaning only
that it presents a nominally resonant 50 ohm load.  Almost anything else you
can put in the air will radiate significantly better, open wire feed or not
:-)
