Your system of measurements are not funny...ours are.
Look at any set of our building blueprints and look at the scale these are 
drawn...12"=3/8"...cheeeeeee......now where did I put the architects 
scale...
It really was fun when I used to run Autocadd at work and was trying to get 
my work scaled to fit on the size of paper I was plotting  for an 
architect....
