Dave, take you calculator and multiply 2.54 (cm/in.) X 12 (in./ft.) = ?

My calculator says "30.48" every time I do this.

Well then, 3.05 is close enough and "3" is close enough for government work.

Where did that 3.05 ft per meter come from?  Looks more like 3.28+
ft/meter.  Just remember two ratios:  2.54 cm/in and 39.37 in/meter.
And in finer measurements, l mm = about 0.040 inch.

Your system of measurements are not funny...ours are.
Look at any set of our building blueprints and look at the scale these
are 
drawn...12"=3/8"...cheeeeeee......now where did I put the architects 
scale...
It really was fun when I used to run Autocadd at work and was trying to
get 
my work scaled to fit on the size of paper I was plotting  for an 
architect....
