Open wire line is 2 wires seperated by a distance. It
is not about insulators every few inches, but about
maintaining parallel seperation. The impedance is a
function of wire diameter and seperation distance.
You could technically run 2 parallel wires with
supports at the top and supports at the bottom and
virtually no insulators and as long as the wires stay
parallel you would acheive your parallel transmission
line.
If you follow this you may be able to configure your
line down the front of the house with virtually no
impact on the Bavarian look of your wifes decorating.
Just string 2 parallel wires running from the eaves of
the roof down to some solid stake a foot or so above
the ground, srting some wire between the roof
attachment and the ground attachment that won't break
like copperweld, and tension it. Maybe a couple of
cross braces in that run may be needed, but if should
have very little visual impact. You could even pain
the wire if needed to blend into the background. Run
your flexible line to the top of the parallel wires at
the roof and some flexible wire through the window at
the basement and your done.
The visual imapact should be far less than parallel
coax. The problem with parallel coax also is that
loss is a function of SWR and high SWR in coax means
high loss, which is the whole point of open wire line.
The loss due to SWR is so low that the impact of
high SWR on the line becomes acceptable.
Hope this helps
