The solution is not to compensate for the high and low roll off with 
equalizing. That just attempts to force the rig to do something it's trying 
not to do.   the result of that may be distortion and garbage.  ideally, the 
rig should pass the desired response with no effort and the eq. etc. used to 
_attenuate_ audio in the proper places.  It's interesting that the AM 
response, which looks like what you would see with a broadcast transmitter 
(except not as wide) would cover the lower frequencies with a nice gradual 
tapering going up, but the ssb response is much narrower regardless of the 
manufacturer's claim of something like 3.9 khz b/w.   if the ssb curve can't 
be changed, the solution is not to force it but to find another rig with the 
desired response.  TS870 comes to mind.
