[TenTec] omni vi plus

Hi John,

I have an Omni VI version 3. This is the Omni VI that is upgraded to be
nearly identical to an Omni VI Plus. I am pretty sure that the buttons
on my version 3 are the same as on a "Plus". The buttons are labeled N-1
and N-2 and control the filters used in the 9 MHz 1st IF. There is also
a single NR button which turns the DSP noise reduction function on or
off. DSP is also used for the notch and auto notch function, and
receive audio always passes through the DSP circuitry, so it would be
incorrect to say that the NR button can turn the DSP off.

In all versions of the Omni VI, whichever NAR or N-1/N-2 filter you
select is cascaded with the stock 2.4 kHz filter in the 9 MHz IF. The
N-1 and N-2 filters cannot be both cascaded with each other and the
stock 2.4 kHz at the same time. In all cases there is a 15 kHz "roofing"
filter at the very beginning of the 9 MHz IF. There is one transistor
and the noise blanking switch in between the 15 kHz filter and the 2.4
kHz filter. With these active stages in between I don't know if you
could say they are cascaded. I kind of thought that the word cascade
implied little or no active circuitry in between.

In the 6.3 MHz IF you select from one of four filters, if you have all
four installed. Again, whether this fits into the standard usage of the
word "cascaded" is unclear to me, since there is a frequency conversion
going on between the 9 MHz IF and the 6.3 MHz IF. The 6.3 MHz filters
can only be used one at a time, and cannot be cascaded with each other.

The only difference, as far as IF filtering is concerned, between the
Omni VI Plus or version 3 and the other Omni VI radios, is the ability
to install two optional 9MHz filters instead of just one. To accomplish
this, using the same number of filter select buttons, Ten-Tec deleted
the 2.4 button and changed from a single NAR button to N-1 and N-2 buttons.
