[TenTec] Argosy I "Thump"

I think the mods I have seen for the Argosy provide for the addition of a variable i.f. gain gain control. Wouldn't a switchable -10dB or -20db attenuator at or near the front end of the Argosy provide the RF attenuation you suggest, and be simpler to implement?

Backing off on the RF gain (not the IF gain) can minimize the excess
signal power stored in the filter to make the thump. At least that works
in my Corsair II. You need to keep enough gain to handle propagation
fades though and let the AGC take care of those smaller variations.
