[TenTec] Ocean noise

I was troubled by the Ocean Noise for a good while and thought there was a
noisy stage somewhere along the line. But I found in my case that was not
the problem--and that in my case there was no problem.
I would suggest trying the following, assuming you are using the latest
version of firmware for the Orion 1. Try turning the RF gain down until the
ocean sound disappears. If it does not disappear, you have a problem. Then
crank it up until you just barely hear the ocean sound. I am assuming you
are not listening to a signal or to a signal more or less at the noise
level.
Then effectively disconnect the antenna by selecting the ANT2 or RX antenna
input if nothing is connected to them, or by disconnecting the antenna
manually. In my Orion, the set goes quiet. There is no sign of a noisy
internal stage. In my case the ocean noise was just greatly amplified band
noise. (I just did this on 17m with the preamp on and found the band
thermal noise to be just audible at a gain setting of 26. Obviously I don't
need to have the preamp on).
I have found that W4ZV'z suggestion of setting the audio gain to 50% and
turning the RF gain up just enough to hear band noise is a simple and
effective way to set things up.
I have learned that I don't need a lot of the gain the Orion has to offer.
If I am not looking for weak cw signals, have the RF gain up, and am annoyed
by hearing the Orion amplify thermal noise between cw elements or
characters, I may on occasion go to slow AGC, which on a decent cw signal
will prevent the Ocean from bubbling up between elements. At this point the
rx sounds like my FT1000MP and 756. It took me a good while to realize why
the Orion seemed noisy. The last firmware makes it much easier than did all
the fiddling required by earlier firmware.
YMMV

Any chance the Noise Reduction (NR) is active?

I have the same issue. Much more noise than my FT1000D.

Turning down the rf gain was the first thing I tried. Down to 50-60%..still
a LOT more noise than should be and much more than the MK 5. I still suspect
it is some setting but I have not had the time to mess with it. Probably
won't for several days so after my next bout with it, if I find it I will
report. To those who requested the updates, I will get to those also. 73,

Yes, but how does one protect from puncture through two boxes, the outside
one & inside one, puncture through two layers of 2" thick rigid foam and
thus leaving dents 1/4" deep and scratches on the equipment?
No drop involved.

I have been hearing the net about 2:00 PM Central time
on or about 7.251. Much QRM from broadcasters. I
just got my O2 so I will be interested in seeing how
all the filtering will handle the carriers.

The puncture wounds are new to me! Probably fork lift damage maybe??? I
have even double boxed and used some indoor -outdoor carpet along with
everything else however it adds weight to the shipping cost. I think that
DHL drivers have a vested interest in making things arrive in good shape-so
I hear. I shipped out a dozen or so items since last summer via DHL and it
worked for me. They were fast and cheaper than most. I even sent a large
cubical quad out west and it arrived in good shape. The package was 13 ft
long x 1 ft diam and about 50 lbs! 73 Lew/KlNDV

Before you throw it in the ocean, try
turning RF Gain down until the noise drops.
This is exactly the point I was making before
about users not setting RF Gain correctly and
complaining "My Orion is noisy". :-)

I am still looking for accessories for my 540 (triton IV). I am primarily
looking for the digital readout and the 160 meter converter, but would
consider complete stations, or even a 544. Must be in good condition
electrically and cosmetically.
Thanks- Danny

I checked in once. Good news, bad news. Good: the Orion can pull
weak ham sigs out from between the broadcasters. Bad: It's still
hard to get through on 100W -- no fun on the East Coast! Why can't
there be a better time / freq? Mornings on 40 or evenings on 80 seem
like a better deal.
