And, do you have a separate ground between the power supply and the radio? 
You should and thus not depend on the DC negative for ground.  Wire should 
be #10 AWG for runs of 5 ft or less.

There should be no concern for a 5KW FM at 1 mile.  AM, well that's a 
different story.
