[TenTec] Paragon brains gone

Hi Ken... (Re Paragon)

One of the things that can cause the symptoms you describe is insufficient
filtering of the power supply DC.

This can happen in the early matching power supplies in the following way:

The computer-grade filter capacitor was mounted on the PC board with #10
screws going through holes in the board and into the capacitor studs. These
screws would sometimes loosen (probably due to transformer vibration) and
begin to arc or have a faulty connection.

The microprocessor would not tolerate the pulses, but the leds and the lamps
would still operate.

Just a thought.

buttons? Perhaps something jiggled loose or maybe you need to re-seat some
of the connectors inside the radio starting with those that effect the
display. Are you getting intelligence from the audio or is it just noise? It
sounds like you are saying the radio is working except for the frequency
read-out. Don't know what else I can suggest.

dead this should not effect operation of the radio or display, only the loss
of calendar, clock and frequency memories. Perhaps you did something to the
wiring on the inside of the power supply when removing it from service. I
purchased a reconditioned Paragon from Ten-Tec 4 or 5 months ago and
operated it a considerable time before finally purchasing a rechargeable
battery. In my opinion you should check to be certain the leads from inside
the power supply to the rig are not shorted or open, and the right voltages
are present. Also check the primary fuse (perhaps first).
