Mark,
My "original" Orion is due back from repair tomorrow and I'll check for 
sure, but my memory is that you are right.  I had to turn the volume up, 
with monitor at 100% to hear anything on the microphone too.  Monitor worked 
quite well on my RTTY signal, however.  Maybe just the way it is, but I'll 
check and report to you this weekend.
