By "S9" do you mean -73 dBm level or just "9" on the S meter?
My test was done with a known level in dBm, preamp on, attenuator off.

As my Orion was still open, I made a quick test by feeding 14 kHz signal
directly to ADC input on A7 board. The spurious response is present there,
so it is, at least in part, a DSP probblem.
