Problem solved. K4BXN advised fitting the extra washers which I've now done - much nicer "feel" and still no slipping or backlash, so I'm now OK for the next 20 years :)

  Subject: [TenTec] Corsair PTO rebuild

Well, I finally plucked up courage to do a PTO rebuild on my 20 yr old Corsair II yesterday - I couldn't stand the "slipping" drive any longer! I used the TenTec kit, and after a couple of hours work it was all back in the rig and working well - no slipping and no backlash.

My question: although it no longer slips, the drive now feels slightly "stiffer" than it did previously - it certainly doesn't feel as "light" as the drive on my remote VFO which has had hardly any use. TenTec say you can space the rear plastic retainer off the PTO box using 3 washers rather than 2 if the action feels rough - I presume this reduces the spring tension on the ball drive and would make the action "lighter".

Has anyone tried using the 3 washers? Or do you think the action will free up after a bit of use? I'm keen to get some advice before pulling the retainer off again .... getting it back on is the hardest part of the job!

  Grateful for any help.
