John, I changed the main encoder several months ago.  Although some of 
the details are vague in my memory, it requires removing lots of screws 
and the front panel.  I also had to remove the LCD display to gain easy 
access to the encoder.  Some more nimble people may be able to avoid 
doing that.

While the replacement step was easy, it appears that the newer encoders 
use different cable connectors from the original.  I didn't notice that 
and used the original connector and cable.  As a result, the replacement 
didn't work and I was left scratching my head.  The new cable must be 
installed also.

Also beware that there are insulators on the LCD display pins that can 
fall off if you remove it.
