[TenTec] Argonaut V Speach Processor/ ALC setting

I purchased a new Argonaut V last week and am trying to get it set up for 
SSB.  I have received a couple of comments that my audio is distorted. I am 
setting the ALC per the instruction manual but am unsure just how the speech 
processor should be set.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
