I'd suggest you take a portable short wave radio along with you to the TV store and check out the set you are interested in.  I picked up a little transistor radio from Radio Shack recently that covers slices from 5.8 to 18.15 mHz in addition to the AM and FM bands.  

By the way, congratulations on having a wife who can fix your Sony.  She sounds neat!
