I don't have the Heil mic or the NCS switcher, but I had a similar experience 
with my O II and the T-T 706.  I have the mic gain set to 52 for SSB but got 
light-audio reports on AM.  Turning up the mic gain to 90-100 solved that and, 
no, the ALC light did not come on.
