I would try to reseat the display to the board.
You will find a row of pins on each side of the display board.
The pins stop making good contact after a number of years.
Be very careful and work each side in and out a few times.
If you don't want to do it again take the display off the board and  before 
you put it back take a small brush and put a little contact cleaner on  the 
pins.
With the same brush clean all connectors to and from the display.
Use very little contact cleaner on the brush.
Also, turn the screws that hold the board on which the display board sits  
and reseat them.
Do not over turn them when you screw them back in.
That should clear up the problem.
If it does not you will have to start to check the circuit to the display  or 
the display itself.
Look around for a bad cap or cold solder joint.
