I once made a folded dipole for 40M with 16 inch spreaders.  It did not work well on 30M or 17M.  So I to two pieces of wire ran them in the center of the fold and tuned those wires in free space to 30M and 17M.  Guess what on 40, 30 and 17M my SWR was less than 1.3 to 1 on each band with no tuner.  Of course I had a balun at the feed point.  End of problem.
