[TenTec] 555 Scout HELP

John,

I used to own a Scout and never had any problems with audio gain or SWR, but
is your Buddipole less than 2:1 SWR with no tuner? I'm assuming your other
rigs must have have auto-tuners that can tune out an antenna mis-match. The
MFJ tuner could be the problem. Do you ever operate without it? You should
be able to get the Buddipole to a low enough SWR that the tuner isn't really
necessary. The Buddipole user group website has good info on settings for
any configuration. Ten-Tec rigs seem to have problems with RF feedback if
you have grounding issues or a bad antenna match. Does the Scout show a low
SWR in Tune mode with no tuner? Do you get full output key down on CW? I
have Buddipole and get a pretty decent SWR if I spend time with an antenna
analyzer to get the best coil taps and whip lengths.

You might also try another mike, in case your mike cable has a bad ground. I
did once have a problem due to a Ten-Tec mike with my Scout. I hope some of
these suggestions help. Good luck.
