If you want a good introduction into Roofing Filters and a good discussion 
following on modern radio AGC systems, you should download the MP3 file and 
then the PDF or PPT file.  Very interesting and very enlightening.  The MP3 
file is about 21 meg and runs for about 45 mins to an hour.  It is well 
worth your time.
