Absolute correct. Run the RF output always at 100% and reduce the audio
level from the sound card and or the mike gain to produce 30 to 35 watts of
output. Now then, this says tune up to maximum output or rated output in
the TUNE or CW mode. Leave the RF level or Drive or how ever your radio is
defined to operate at maximum or rated output. Should be about 100 watts or
so. Then with signal from the computer soundcard, adjust the soundcard
level in combination to the MIC or Line level so that the output is abut 30
to 35 watts. If you are feeding the MIC input then the level control should
be about the same as you use for SSB.
Key point, do not use any form of speech processing and do not adjust any
level such that the ALC indicator is active. This applies to any radio
regardless of make, model or what ever. If you feel that you need more
watts, then you need to add an external amp. And here again, tune to max or
rated output and leave things this way. Do not re-tune for lower power
level. Then reduce audio from the sound card such that power output is 30
to 35 % of rated output.
PSK set-up and operation is a piece of cake. Most hams make it too
complicated.
