I like my pair of FT-857D for VHF. I think the sensitivity rating of the
Tentec 6N2 is about ten dB poorer than the real state of the art, but
close to the performance of many Japanese radios though I have been
making contacts on 6 and 2 quite well with the 857 out to 300 miles
anyway even with a poor 6m antenna and the band not up.

There are those that think the transverter gives them better
performance. Could be, its certainly more complicated to set up.

The IC 706 has a reputation of not having a great noise blanker. The
FT-857 noise blanker works very well.
