>From your description of the problem, I suspect that it may be a circuit one.  If possible, measure the voltage across the relay coil and see if, when it "sticks", the coil voltage has gone to zero.  If it is staying closed with zero voltage across the coil, then it is a relay problem.  

I'm not familiar with the relay used in the 509, but dry reed relays are quite common.  My Mouser catalog has five pages of them.  If you can give me a physical description and a manufacturer's name and part number I can probably help you find a replacement.
