I'm happily using a 544, a 540, a 509, and a 505 ( all bought used for fraction of their new price ) besides an Omni VII.  No firmware, software, microprocesors.  Just PTOs ( and string in three cases ):-p

Could be wrong, but based on operational lifespan of most computers I've owned, the old stuff will likely be operating long after the Omni VII ( and this OP ) is in the ground.
