[TenTec] Labels for Omni V.9 chips

Here's what I did:

I made a pencil rubbing of the buttons on the rig to get the exact size. Then I created a rounded rectangle in a Word document, sized it correctly, and colored the fill and outline with the penultimate darkest shade of brown in the standard palette. Then I copied it eleven times, so I had the twelve required. (Don't make them too close together; they are harder to cut out if they are closer than about half the label's width apart.) I formatted them as behind text, and produced the text I wanted on the buttons. Instead of having a 1 over the 160 key, I made the labels "160/1", "80/2", etc., through "ENTER", "SHIFT/0", and "CLEAR". I made the text in Ariel 10 point, white in color. You can make fine adjustments in the position of a shape by selecting it and then "nudging" it with the arrow keys. This centers the text on each label.

I copied the set of twelve and pasted them back in twice, so I would have two extra sets, in case I messed up, which I did. I printed the page on an Avery 5165 8 1/2 by 11 label. Here's the trick, which took some experimentation to discover: Put a piece of Scotch tape (the shiny kind, not the transparent, invisible kind) over the rows of labels before you cut them out. This protects the corners when you are cutting them out, and protects the printing from your finger when you use the buttons. It also makes them look nicer than the flat paper stock.

I removed the old labels, cleaning off the glue with rubbing alcohol, cut the new labels out with an Exacto knife, and stuck them on. It took a couple of tries in a few cases, especially because I have a tremor that makes fine motor control difficult. But it worked. My wife came in to see the results (she had seen me working on the computer), and couldn't find the labels until I pointed them out to her.

I can email you the Word file if you want.

Good luck.

Frank
