Definitely.

Almost true. The power supply only protects the PA transistors if the 
high SWR load presents a low impedance at the transistor collectors and 
so causes a high collector current. If the load with high SWR presents a 
high impedance load at the collectors the power supply won't shut down, 
its up to the voltage handling capability of the transistors to protect 
themselves.

I'd think so, they all run about the same output power, 100 watts and so 
about the same normal and excess collector current.

I think so.

Some switching supplies are silent, especially when made for radio use. 
Others are not so quiet.
