[TenTec] Starter Rigs

 Let's try this again.....

You have to be careful of the 'Kenwoods, Yaesu's and Icoms" from that era.

As long as they work, they're great, but there's been a number of announcements from the big 3
that parts are no longer available, nor will the rigs be accepted for evaluation and/or repair. You
may find a 'third party' to fix the rig, but again, this is only if he can find the parts to do so.

Sometimes, it's just cheaper to buy even a 'low end' new rig than to go through the hassle of
getting something older 'fixed'. Plus, there's the guarantee that the new rig should work out of
the box.

When I worked for one of the ham dealers, that's the advice I gave, not to increase sales, but
to help a newcomer get into the hobby with the least amount of frustration.... Nothings going
to cool a newcomer off like a broken rig that's gone weeks for repair (if it can be repaired..)

Just food for thought....

I've helped a good number of "new" hams, young and old. I have found the
best starter rigs are those in the $300-$400 range with a general coverage
receiver. Rigs in this range, if in good physical and operating condition,
can be used for a number of years and sold for 80-110% of the original cost.

Unfortunately, it's rare to find a nice TEN TEC in that range as they seem
to hold their value better than those from Japan.

PS My favorite rig for a newbie was the TS-130S. Now it's the TS-430S, 440S,
or 450S. They are easy to find, buy, and resell.
