Ron,

In Europe, DJ7VY published a paper on how to rework the front end of the
R599 and make a decent receiver out of it.
Without that, it was pretty cr^ppy.

I couldn't remember the exact time but it probably was the 70s.

The Kenwood twins were produced in the early
70s, and had several iterations.
The last ones were produced in the early 80s.
I know a guy who has the final version.
