Many years ago, a friend gave me a Heath HW-7 QRP rig.  I managed to put 
up a 40 meter dipole on the roof of my 3 story apartment building lying 
directly on the shingles.  I managed to work Chicago, which is about 70 
miles east of that building.  The only way I can see that happening is 
NVIS. I didn't work much else with that antenna, either.
