And I tweak the RF gain in addition to what Carl said...

People seem to be, well, "spoiled" these days.
They want to listen to 20 over 9 signals.
Years ago, few people had amps or beams and most signals were much weaker.
With today's signals, you really can (and should) turn the RF gain back.

An S3 signal is perfectly Q5 readable if everyone else on the band is S3 or
below, AND you'd be amazed how the noise disappears!

BTW, this is a firmware issue too:  the firmware running between the
operator's ears!

That's exactly right.  I'm just saying I can do better on CW by 
selecting the best filter for the conditions.  And on SSB, I do better 
by selecting the best filter and PBT value for the conditions.  Your 
mileage may vary.
