Lee,
You have to keep in mind the difference between "use" and "ship with".
Most radios can use (are compatible with), electret mics, but Icom may be
the only company that actually ships an electret mic with the radio.
Here in Germany there is a company that specializes in converting your
standard Kenwood, Ten-Tec, Yaesu mic into an electrets mic. Costs about
$50. You send them your old mic and get it back with an eletret capsul one
week later.

I thought the only radios to use electret mic were Icom radios??

FYI, here are the settings I've evolved for the 706 electret mic and
v3.028:
H/W Mic gain 3.0 dB
Front panel mic gain 40
TX EQ 0 dB for normal use, -5 dB for pileups SP no higher than 4; there's
still some distortion at higher levels
The 707 dynamic mic requires much more gain, with more distortion. I have
verified that this distortion is not coming from RFI (that's a separate
issue).
