FWIW, before I buy a USB-serial converter, I check out Newegg
reviews. A lot of times, I will see mention of which OS supports the
unit along with notes about how someone found a driver for Win 7 or
some other OS or resolved a driver problem.
So far, I've been lucky: I've found drivers for every USB-serial
converter I've purchased and they's all worked without difficulty --
that may be because they all use a Prolific chipset. I had one fail
in an odd way such that the system saw it and indicated all was well,
but nothing got through it
