It's a perfect candidate for the 715 speech processor. That's where I used mine. Don't do much SSB, and none on the VI+, so that's on the shelf.

Having owned two different ones, they are really a great radio. 

If I revealed any negatives they would be the birdies on 10M and the rather 
poor action of the internal speech processor.  Other than those two items, 
I found the receiver is great and the transmitter with a good mike produces 
excellent audio.
