That's where (as I understand the story) the "Old Timers" with their "Old
Timer" houses/windows had an advantage. Apparently a common practice was to
tie a string to the feedline and then drop the feedline out the window onto
the ground when they weren't operating. A lightning strike might damage the
antenna but wouldn't be very likely to get into the equipment or house. Not
to mention that "hollow state" radios also tend to have an advantage in
surviving spikes and surges (on both the antenna and the power supply sides.)
