I've used the Silver "Sharpie" and the trick is to dab the paint on
in a series of little dots rather than try to follow the outline of the letters.

Those who prefer a white color might try a paint marker available
at Fastenal, WW Grainger, ENCO or MSG machinists' supply or some
hardware stores.  Try to get one that uses xylene as a solvent, I've found them easier to control than the water-based ones.
