That is a common, but incorrect assumption.  My statement is on the 
basis of a controlled experiment, running 1.5kW through a choke for a 
while and FEELING both the wire and the core. The wire heats, but ONLY 
the length of it wound around the core, not the end leads away from the 
core, and the core does NOT heat.
