Mike, just be sure the substitute crystal is the type sold for computer 
clocks, or another way of saying that is it has the same capacitance 
spec as the original xtal.  It could be a failure of the crystal but 
most are pretty rugged.
Worth a try to just bridge another crystal of the same frequency in 
parallel and see if any signs of life to the oscillator.  You could just 
tack solder on the new crystal for this test.  You don't care if the 
oscillator is slightly off, just that you get a signal out.

After all, the use of two parallel crystals was common for broadening a 
VXO a few years back in QRP rigs.
