Dave,

I have NOT played with the magnetic loop.  I live in a rural subdivision on 
a one acre lot so I have some room for antennas but little desire for more 
than a tri-bander (TH-7) at 50 feet, a top loaded HF-2V with 160M-mod kit 
and seasonally the K9AY loop system. I've had a TH-7 and HF-2V up at this 
location for over twenty-six years (both replaced with a new version or 
repaired at least once) and they have taken my DXCC total from 130 or so 
when we moved here to 347. This location is electrically quiet; for example 
the 20 meter noise floor near 14070 is -125 dBm at the moment. At times 
connecting an antenna to the Flex-1500 increases the NF only by 6 dB greater 
than an when on a dummy load.

When I move to town due to age or medical condition, if I can still play 
radio, I probably will try a magnetic loop, a HEX beam, and another HF-2V if 
there's room. The one thing I have NOT mentioned and something to consider 
is the required separation between the TX antenna and the K9AY Loop 
System.... I think its 100 feet if you operate QRO, but you should read the 
documentation to avoid damage to the pre-amp or your receiver. As my 
FLEX-1500 is operated as receive only and as the sub-receiver of an OMNI-VII 
and Titan-425 station, I made sure I had more than the minimum distance and 
put a RF limiter in the RX line.  YMMV...

Thanks for the input.  Am reading up on the loop system.  Do you have any
reflections or thoughts on the magnetic loop (e.g., Pixel)?  Saw it
demonstrated at Visalia and Dayton last spring and the signal:noise ratio
improvement was impressive at the broadcast band frequencies.  Am wondering
about 14-28 Mhz. range.

So far, only positive comments are coming for the K9AY loop system.  No
comments yet on magnetic loop system.

You may notice significant reduction in signal strength when using the K9AY
Loop System. You will also notice a significant improvement in the signal to
noise ratio. I have found that DX signals which are marginal copy on the TX
antenna ( a vertical ) are solid copy on the K9AY Loop System.  The K9AY
Loop System is a great 160-80-40 solution IF you cannot install a 400 foot
or longer Beverage.....

Interested in hearing about experiences with various receiving antennas
useful for input to Flex 6000 series radios (monitoring various band slices)
that are effective up to 30 Mhz, and possible 6 meters.



1.        Magnetic Loop - better mounted low, or at top of tower, or doesn't
matter?

2.       Wire arrays?
