[TenTec] Microphone Wanted

While the 708 and 709 do have the same electrical specs, the 708 is omni
directional while the 709 is unidirectional. A mike with a omni directional
pattern typically will pick up sound from the front, sides and back equally
while a unidirectional mike picks up from the front only. With radios,
amps, power supplies, computers and such on the desk, those most likely
behind the mike, then those sounds are also picked up more so by the omni
directional mike but not the case with the unidirectional mike. Should one
have a quiet room then either will work satisfactorily. If ones room is
plagued with noises then the unidirectional mike choice is better.

Just this morning I worked a station that had a S-9 +20 dB signal on voice
but between words his signal was S-9. This was due to amp noise producing
a roar in the background. I inquired as to the processing being used and he
indicated that it was off. One other station suggested he reduce his mike
gain and get closer to the mike. He did and his audio was wonderful. The
correct mike along with good mike technique and proper gain adjustment
typically makes wonderful improvements to audio quality.
